Speculatius Demonstation
(German Christmas Pressed Cookies)(This program was held several years ago, and was one of our most successful
events to date. We are keeping this info
here for your information and enjoyment.
If we get enough response, we may
reschedule it.)Come and discover the delightful experience of this step-by step demonstration. Our pastry chef will show you all the procedures necessary for the baking of these traditional spiced German Christmas cookies using a number of antique cookie molds. The dough can also be used for just about any kind of cookie mold. In Germany, Holland, and Belgium, especially, these cookies are made at least a month before Christmas in order for the full spice flavor to develop. Many pastry shops in Europe tie them with bright red ribbons and hang them in their shop windows -- some of the cookies measure 2 to 3 feet in length! For your own personal use, smaller cookies can be hung from the Christmas tree or used as holiday gifts. We have collected a number of antique speculatius molds over the years and will be using these in the demonstration. By the way, the German word "speculatius" is derived from the Latin meaning "mirror" or in this case, "mirror image," since the pressed cookie when unmolded creates a mirror image of the shape.
The program lasts about an hour, and participants will get to sample the results.
